Sighting in the new gun

Lane and I went out shooting the new gun tonight. He just put the new scope on it. A Vortex Viper. He also re-loaded a bunch of bullets for it. So we thought we would give it a try.
The only bad thing I can say about it is it kicks like a mule!!!

It didn't shoot very good, but it is just the first time out. We still have 80 days to get it dialed in!! I did try a couple shots @ 900 yards just for fun, and it was only hitting a few feet low! It is alot of fun to shoot. We will install a turet on the scope after we get it dialed in good. Then you just have to turn a dial when shooting long distances.

It should be a great gun. I am excited to spend time getting it ready for the big day!
Thanks Lane

Scouting Partners

On Saturday we finally got out for a scouting trip, and had the best possible helpers I could find!

If you look close above Braxton's head in the background you can see the heard of elk we were looking at. There was a total of 26 elk there. Only 3 of them were cows the rest were bulls!! Two of them were pretty good sized ones. Most of the bulls were still only grown out to there thirds, but the two big ones were just starting to be six points.

I left my good camera sitting in my truck at the cabin, I tried to take some pics with my cell phone through the spotting scope, but as you can see they didn't work out very well.

The boys were pretty wore out from the night before. It was the Relay for Life. I think they stayed up until after midnight, so they were pretty wore out. They fell asleep on the ride out there, but they livened up pretty quick when the elk started coming out!

We had to leave that same night, because I had to make it home for church responsibilities. Parker was very upset. He wanted to stay up late again. He was having a lot of fun playing cards with the grandma's!!

It was fun to get up and see some elk. Hopefully there will be a few more trips before we start getting really serious!!

87 days to go!

Just under 3 months! This is going to be the longest summer of my life. You know its pretty bad when someone at work asks me when my hunt starts, and I automatically say "In 87 days."

I can't seem to sleep lately and when I do my dreams are flooded with a 380" typical 6x6! AHHHH!! The anxiety is killing me!!

At work today they put out a proposed schedule for the next 4 months, and they had me working in Mt. Pleasant all through September. That called for a quick trip to the bosses office!! He was pretty cool about it, and said he forgot. Oh I won't let him forget again!

I have been trying so hard lately to get up on the mountain to just take a ride and look around, but life just keeps happening! I just cant seem to find the time. Hopefully very soon though.

I'm so excited I can't stand myself...Neither can my wife.

1st scouting trip.

I guess you can't really call it a scouting trip since I didn't really go scouting, but it was the first trip to the cabin since drawing the tag. I took the whole family up on Friday night to go spend our first night in the new cabin. It was awesome!

I am so grateful that my parents built this amazing cabin. It will be so much fun for so many years to come, and what a perfect year to get it done. With a big bull tag in hand!! The boys had so much fun they didn't want to leave.

The weather didn't cooperate to much to get any scouting done. We went to Bowery for dinner on Friday night, then went for a little ride to see if we could see any elk, but it was raining pretty hard.

On Saturday we woke up to snow!! It wasn't sticking on the ground at the cabin, but still fun to see snow so late in the year.

I hated to leave the cabin on Saturday afternoon, but had some really important business to take care of!

JaLee and I drove to Spanish Fork to pick up a new gun for the hunt. It is a Savage 300 win. mag!! I can't wait to get out and shoot it! It felt a little weird doing business for a gun in a gas station parking lot! We got a few confused looks from people.

I hope to make another trip up in the next couple weeks to see if we can find some bulls. Hopefully the next post will have some elk in it!!
